Monster is OK, it's got awesome art with lots of European scenery and I like the fairly realistic way characters and actions are depicted. on the other hand, the story wanders so much it could be said to consist only of fillers. There are also three problems: Johan doesn't really achieve anything, at least in the 13 first volumes I've read. He just murders indirectly a couple of people and gets rich. So much for the world domination plan. The second problem is that the author emphasizes way too often the fact how monstrous Johan is, by making sidekicks say it out loud. Every time someone says it, it diminishes Johan's character in the eyes of viewers. The third problem is that although Monster tries to outwit the reader, it never succeeds. Being a conspiracy manga it's way too easy to figure things out way before they're revealed. I guess the worst part was with the former spy, who could have tattooed Kindergarten 511 on his face or had neon signs to point it and it would've been exactly as obvious as it was.
