I agree with Anonymous, Busou Renkin is a good choice especially since it's now finished both in Japan and here, and Watsuki-san's story and notes are worth putting aside the time to read. Which character was Kazuki Muto's character a male form of? Hint: She was a minor character (I think) in Rurouni Kenshin, but ended up on the cover at least once. Actually. Busou Renkin has taken alot of inspiration from Rurouni. Also you get to hear how Watsuki-san had gripes with dealing with the story including the Philosopher's Stone which pops up later which he tried to avoided because another manga also had it. He didn't give it by name, but he might have been referring to Hiromu Arakawa. ANd speaking of...
My suggestion for you is to start Fullmetal Alchemist, and trust me it takes a steep turn even from the beginning. Both split off radically and you can get both and not really worry about going through deja vu each time. I'm surprised the rest of Anonymous didn't suggest it. And will >>9899163
