Vinland Saga has been less about revenge and more about political intrigue lately. But a couple major points you'll notice about how it handles the revenge plot:
1. Askeladd, the guy who the protagonist wants to kill for murdering his dad, is more of a "good guy" within the overall series layout than not. So even if you think he deserves it, you can never really want Askeladd to die, because if he did the vikings would be pretty much fucked.
2. Askeladd's dad was actually a major character in the first couple volumes, and awesome, so it gets a rise out of you when he dies.
