Planetes is the most realistic story set in space that has ever been animated. Or filmed.
It concentrates on the life of several blue-collar workers who collect the trash from the orbit of earth that would otherwise have a chanse of colliding with spacecraft. This occupation was established after a notable accident of a couple of decades back, when a stray screw destroyed a space liner by colliding with it in rather high relative speed.
There's no artificial gravity, no lasers and no aliens. The story revolves around the daily life of the garbage collectors and other relevant stuff that's happening currently. Such as the launch of a jovian exploration vessel that's just being completed, or international terrorism (that happens with reasons that are actually explained and make sense), or - for the love of god - effects, illnessesses and actual, realistic physiological an psychological problems suffered by humans assuming they lived outside of Earth.
Planetes offers no instant solutions to anything, and in actuality, does not offer solutions to several of the conflicts introduced within. It's the only scifi TV series (of any format) that does not assume it's viewers are idiots who are just in for juvenile fantasy in futuristic environment.
tl;dr: Best scifi series ever, any format. Comic's also awesome - slightly different but with the same overall tone.
