This is only vaguely related to the theme, but when I had seen only the first two episodes of Haruhi and had been spoiled as to the fact that Haruhi had magic powers, I interpreted it an oddly askew way. (Although one which is not necessarily wrong.)
Essentially, my idea was that Haruhi's powers work retroactively by rewriting the past. So one day Mikuru is just a regular girl, and the next day she's a time traveler. This, combined with the expression of horror on Mikuru's face as she's on the clock, gave me the impression that Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya would suddenly take a right turn towards some sort of nightmarish world where people's entire identities are raped at the will of Haruhi.
Which might have been an interesting way to do things.
