the main reason i dislike naruto is because it is a neverending story. a plot is not a plot without any plot progression, it is just a setting. EX: how long did it take for orochimaru to die? has anything definitively been done by naruto towards reaching his goal, or being dissuaded from it, besides general learning? what is even the point of the series? what are the characters trying to accomplish? when i think of this, all i can think of is "naruto becoming the hokage."
now the answers to those questions may have changed by this point, i don't know, but it's taken FAR too long to do so. it's just a fightfest to keep young people entertained with no substance.
gurren lagann is an example of a shonen that's done right. it has a clear point and a plot that progresses. GL haters, i'm NOT saying that GL is the best thing since sliced cheese or even a story of true literary substance, only that it actually qualifies as a story, although i don't think i will back down on the point that it actually has something to say beyond 'you fight stronger when you have something to protect' and 'friendship is great.'
