Wasn't it The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle that inspired Haibane Renmei? I have read it and I am aware that they're very different in terms of plot and setting, just sayin' is all.
I need to read more Murakami, only read two and it's not enough to get my head around him. I loved TWUBC but A Wild Sheep Chase?... I could have done without it. It felt somewhat drawn out and mundane in comparison and not intentionally so. None of the more surreal elements were quite so dreamlike and the main character's day to day life juxtaposed wasn't quite so fascinatingly ordinary either.
That may just be what 15 years of refinement of your style does to an author though, or it could be a translation issue. I've heard that there's an entire chapter missing from the English release of TWUBC.
