I've seen UFO catchers going for over 100 (and selling) at a con once or twice in the last few years...either they sold or the vendors took them down, but oh well.
There's a bunch of Bay Area conventions. I think the best is Fanime in San Jose, which is like an hour or two away but a fantastic convention; I've been to cons all over the country and it's still my favorite. It's apparently hell to staff, but from an attendee's standpoint it's awesome. Wide variety of programming (not just anime but also dorama and music and all sorts of stuff), nice location (holy fuck restaurants in walking distance and connected-to-con-center hotels), and from a participants' standpoint the various contests, especially the masquerade, are really well-run.
I think Kinokuniya is kind of priced the same everywhere, though. Still, often it beats out the price you'd get with the internet and shipping depending on what you're getting. Mmm, delicious Steel Ball Run volumes...
