Here's the truth:
Older Japanese are a bit racist and xenophobic, very nationalistic, proud and they can't fucking let go of the "bubble economy" issue. Younger Japanese, born 1980s and sooner, are pretty open and like their American peers fairly well. Very young Japanese, annoying as fuck and should be beaten with rods.
In general they believe they're superior to other nations and other Asians in particular. I had a Japanese professor who constantly made jabs at Chinese and Korean kids (it was especially bad after the VTech shooting). She would talk about how violent and dumb koreans are... I mean, seriously. If you're non Japanese and go to Japan they'll be nice to you and help you out if they can, they'll serve you good food and drink with you but if you try to fit in it will never happen. Many "traditional" Japanese places, restaurants, hot springs, hostess clubs, "clubs" and what have you will not accept you and may refuse you outright. I blame American military personel who are probably 18 and haven't left Arkansas until they joined the navy. It doesn't matter with Japanese though, because all foreigners are Americans. I know some hot springs in the northern most island don't let whites in because of past bad acts from drunk Russians. They're weird folk but interesting.
tl;dr I was bored and wrote too much, Japan likes our money and us well enough but have superiority complex.
