Most of the old otaku don't even bother with fansubs, they just know fansubs exist. I've heard some of them have gotten Japanese cable and can watch the shows themselves.
It's the underaged b& and newfags that discovered torrenting anime is easy who bitch the most and are the hypocrites; they want to be 4chan level otaku and free ride, but they're conflicted because of the peer pressure at that forum to buy shit.
And I agree 100% only rewatchable anime should get licensed. Companies buy shit because it's cheap; they hope that something will turn out to be a sleeper hit and thus invest very little in dubbing, scripting, and promotion. But all of that is still expensive and it adds up since people aren't going to carry or buy horrible anime.
The solution IMO is simple; only license good stuff. The problem is there ISN'T much good stuff around these days and there's no where to show it off; Toonami an Adult Swim are the permanent domain of VIZ MEDIA and its generic shounen.
The only company as far as I'm concerned that isn't fail is the only one doing well - Funimation. And that's because that company has no Eleven investors and is doing things its own way.
