It seems to me, that the actual makers of anime, the japanese studios, are not really bothered by fansubbers. They're more like "oh, people in other countries watch our shows, love our work, and buy our merchandise, and we didn't have to translate it? Thats pretty cool"
However, american companies, paid to have "exclusive rights" to the show, paid to translate and print it to DVD, then nobody buys it because they've seen it already on the interbutts and the dub is shit and the sub is pretty much the same as the fan version.
The japanse makers go "hey, its popular and the merchandise is selling, sweet"
The american buyers go "YOU FUCKS ARE DEVALUING OUR FUCKING INVESTMENT! ITS LIKE STEALING MONEY FROM MY FUCKING POCKET STOP IT YOU ASSHOLES!"
Personally I do not care if the american liscensers of the shows fall into a large hole filled with sharp wooden spikes. Go to hell, just because they paid some money for the right to pay some more money to alter a japenese product and hope to make more money than they've spent, doesn't mean I'm obligated to give them MY money to help them achieve this goal.
