Fansubs. From my understanding:
+Gives U.S. distributors a good idea of what anime/manga would be popular should they be released in the U.S.
-Hurts the market as a whole due to the easy acquisition of shows via direct download and bittorrent.
+Can serve to promote/advertise an anime/manga.
-Some Japanese turn to fansubs as an easy way to acquire a show in high quality only a few days after it is released on television, hurting the market in Japan.
+As a result of the market's demand falling, U.S. distributors can sometimes be reluctant to license an anime/mango... same goes with Jap companies.

As for us? We don't care. Have fun and die young.
