Being a jew (and thus an economics expert), I have this to say: people in all kinds of areas of entertainment need to pay attention to Bandai's distribution of the US Geass.
Geass is turning into a .hack or a Marvel or a Star Wars with a huge ass universe and tons of side materials that simply won't stop. The R1 Geass DVD releases aren't just a release of an anime show, but basically a "starter set" for getting into the Geass universe and all of the various side materials and shit going on with it.
It's friggin genius, and lets them take advantage of a huge moneymaking franchise without alienating fans who don't want to do weeks of online research to get into it. If Marvel did something similar and rolled out 6 volumes of a Marvel universe starter set for $50, not only would they sell like crazy to people who want to get into it but can't possibly figure out how to start, but they'd also be opening up tons of other ways to rip people off just by including a little card advertising the stuff you're now opened up to by getting that far in the story.
tl;dr: Bandai must've hired the Hebrew Hammer, Geass R1 releases are genius.
