Only so much you can do against a nation with vastly superior technology and numbers.
Also, my fellow finfags here might be once again vouching for our ultimate superiority in WW2 battles. But there's some things we have to remember while looking at them.
Finland was allied to the Nazis, and at the time of the WW2 campaigns, Russia's main force was defending against the German assault in the southwest. The troops sent to Finnish front were mostly inexperienced recruits from southern Russia that had never experienced cold winters. They were unfit for winter combat and demoralized about going to fight people they didn't care about in a land they couldn't care less of.
After Hitler's Russian campaign failed and more and more experienced troops were concentrated on the Finnish front, we fell rather fast. This doesn't exactly make the defense any less impressive, but it makes it less supernatural.
