They still live happily ever after, for all we know, she just grows up in her own house as a child.
Anyhow, I thought it was pretty good. Compared to most anime, anyways. Not exactly a literary masterpiece, but that doesn't mean it isn't a decent story. It has its share of shitty anime/japanese cliches, but they're not prevalent enough to make it total garbage despite the rest of the show.
