Type-Moon's Kara no Kyoukai is fucking gorgeous in visual and sound (imo) departments. And it's essentially a murder/supernatural mystery story.
First movie's DEEP, that's /a/'s official opinion, though I might beg to differ. It's fairly out there, imo, but I think the ideas might come together if you think about them enough. One of the other problems probably is that not enough of the story has been revealed yet through the movies.
Texhnolyze has a nice, hard-boiled, gritty urban style of visual that I like. It's a story about cybernetics, and the idealogical gang war it sparks. It's also fairly DEEP, possibly more so than Kara, I'll admit. Either that, or there just really isn't much philosophy to it until the later episodes.
By the by, what's your taste in humor? What constitutes "doing it well" for you?
