Wrong in both Gundam and Gurren-Lagann.
a) If you must watch a Gundam show you have to make it Turn A, the ultimate Tomino masterpiece.
b) Gurren-Lagann's script and plot is extremely strong, excelling in its simplicity. Storytelling was stripped to the basics of an epic and thanks to such a daring measure it created an extremely compelling production. It takes the core structure of the classical epic, and dresses it up in the trappings of giant mecha anime, which in the process it brilliantly sends up, to create a story which is genuinely new and exciting, despite appearing to exist within an already overcrowded genre. It was a struggle of ideals, rather than men. Thus, epic, timeless, beyond pure plot, not needing convoluted twists to propel it forward.
