The anime wasn't very good in comparison to the source material. It tried to follow the manga but had to censor a lot of key elements that are leitmotifs to the story and ended up copping out by stealing the novel's ending which didn't make half as much sense or was nearly as epic as the novel's, because the novel actually had foreshadowing. All in all, I recommend the novel if you really liked the premise and the characters. Just don't expect goofy, cartoonishly exaggerated comedy. The novel is about as morbid and depressing as you can imagine. It's Requiem for a Dream for nerds.
