The current Canadian government has announced that it will present a bill to amend the nation's Copyright Act on Thursday. According to the National Post newspaper, the "Made in Canada Copyright Reform" bill will impose a C$500 fine "for each illegal file shared online," forbid the copying of music from protected CDs, and prevent video recorders from copying shows that have been flagged by the broadcasters.

The newspaper also notes that next month's G8 summit between the United States, Canada, the host country Japan, and other major nations will deal with the proposed Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). If signed and ratified, the agreement will require Internet service providers to filter unauthorized material and reveal the identities of suspected copyright infringers among their users.
