I'm a drawfag and do graphic design for a living.
I appreciate a good story above anything else, but most of the time I tend to judge anime based on character design and other visual traits. If the promo art looks shitty and generic, I expect the show to be equally shitty and generic and pass it up. Usually they turn out that way too.
I also have an interest in the works of specific animators - Hiroyuki Imaishi, Masaaki Yuasa, Yoh Yoshinari or Sushio to name a few.
(I'm not picky with manga though. Some of the best storytellers have pretty humble art.)

Does this make sense to any of you?
