Heres my story.
I was the same as you. All the negativity during the first season made me think it was shit and decide not to watch it. On a whim, I downloaded the first episode to see what it was about, and the entire thing stunk too much of Japanese nationalism for me to stomach it. BUT, I was encouraged at the end of the episode due to Lelouch's little inner monologue and his evil grin. I figured it might be a good show, but I didn't bother to continue, trusting in /a/'s opinion.
When season 2 was about to start and /a/'s love for Geass reached a fever pitch and there were few trolls around, anon convinced me to give it a try. I did, and I found it mildly entertaining until the end of episode 12 (I think), which immediately made the show jump from "wtf is this shit" to "holy fucking shit this is awesome." Sadly, the moment that made it "holy fucking shit this is awesome" only lasted for one episode. The series quickly went in a different direction from what had made me expect it to be awesome, but it was still entertaining, so I kept watching. By the end I figured it had turned out to be an enjoyable experience, but it wasn't the magnitude of an enjoyable experience I had expected it to be after that one moment.
So, watch the first few episodes at least and decide if it is entertaining enough to continue. You will have to kind of turn your brain off for some of the more absurd things that happen (Suzaku running on a wall) and try to pretend they didn't happen in order for you to enjoy the show. If you are incapable of doing that, Geass will NOT be enjoyable for you.
