they still are the newfags now.
IRC has the wonderful property of not fucking your internet in the ass even when it is downloading at or near your maximum bandwidth. torrents on the other hand will rape you just as hard if you are going at 50KB/s or 1MB/s unless you fine tune/under power it. that being said IRC has a learning curve that some people just cant get past even if it is basically a 1 foot high cliff.
this all being said, i would not watch anime even if it was on TV uncut with subs. reason being is that i am a cheap cheap whore who only pays for the internet and has grown accustomed to watching what i feel like when i want to watch it. granted i need to expend more effort to research/preview shows than just turning on the TV and watching a block of anime to see what i will like, but that is how i've always done it and it has worked for me so far.
as for streaming, there are a number of problems. first a foremost is what happens when the service is unavailable/goes out of business. if that were to happen you would have to look for another service that does not offer the same quality, speed, availability, or ease. mind you the alternative may be better in all regards, but there is still quite a bit of effort expended to find such sites. there is also the problem of buffering a video when you are watching it. this isn't a big problem but it can get annoying rather quickly. there is also the instances where you need to deal with advertisements that are placed within the video itself. episode 10 of druaga is a good example of this happening and it can be quite a turnoff to have shit popping up in your video that has no relevance at all and is not sectioned off into commercials.
