Dunno about that but you can't argue against widescreen being more natural. Our eyes see more horizontally than they do vertically, making widescreen more natural. Also, 16:10 is actually the closest aspect ratio to the golden ratio ([1+sqrt(5)]/2=1.618...).>But unlike with VLC that's partially the subbers fault since they didn't take that into consideration.
You should also note that you form a very small minority of people who want subs outside the video area. I have a 5:4 with a 1280x1024 resolution too, and I prefer to have the subs inside the video frame, that way I don't have to focus my eyes outside the 16:9 frame during the video playback.
