I suppose so. I've heard there are plenty of...alternate rules for chess, though, some of which look pretty interesting.
Like, for an example, a rule that each player gets to play three moves before it's the other guy's turn. Except the first move must be one of his own pieces, and the second move must be one of the OPPONENT's pieces, and the third is your own piece again. You're not allowed to make any illegal moves on your second move, like ignoring a Check or going into Check.
Basically, you end up with a game which seems entirely legal according to the standard rules if you were to just read the log.
