In an endeavour that was a close call, the youth, who as the "sacrifice", had always been bullied by others, sublimated his courage and picked up the blade, courageously defending the organisation, thereafter being pursued by the unorthodox clans. At the same time, he was praised by the world and regarded as the lucky youth who had been blessed by "God". Five years later, which was when I first met Elmer, he related his radiant history. At that time -- he was always smiling.
"At that time I kept thinking, there isn't such a thing as gods in this world, I want to use my strength to put a smile on everyone's faces."
Elmer's smile was happy and uncomplicated, revealing his most honest side.
"I don't really know what kind of feeling happiness is, nor do I know whether I am, at this moment, smiling straight from the bottom of my heart. So, I've always been praying for humanity to smile and be happy. This way, I believe there'll be a day when I, myself, will be able to laugh happily."
Could he really bring laughter to others, this man who, himself, understood neither the concepts of happiness nor of smiling?
When asked this by me, he smiled even more widely.
"Yes, perhaps all I'm doing is a waste of energy......but, don't you feel that that, in itself, is a kind of happiness?"
Happy fellow! Thinking like that, I even envy him a little -- at the same time, that was the first I smiled in front of someone.
