In defense of Robotech, they kept a staggering amount of stuff intact despite the name changes, trimming of nudity and some violence, etc. The show's still pretty damn heavy even when it's carved up a bit for kids. You've got the deaths of Roy and Ben, a huge chunk of Ontario gets vaporized, the genocide of the vast majority of Earth's population, and a (relatively) sophisticated love triangle, minus much of the plotless inanity of shows like G.I. Joe and Transformers (Cobra Commander does something retarded, Joes of the week show up to kick his ass, he argues with Destro and/or Baroness and makes a flashy getaway in a ridiculously convoluted manner).
Robotech has to be considered as a product of its time, and it's simply irresponsible to dismiss it out of hand. Without Robotech, I for one would not be a damn weeaboo.
(In some ways I also kind of prefer certain characterization quirks of Robotech over Macross...Hikaru as Rick seems a bit more down-to-Earth and not so much the token Japanese machismo machine condescending to the flightiness of womankind (not like Minmei's a sterling example of the fairer sex), and Roy in Robotech seems a lot less like the token dumb American friend who laughs for no reason and has a black girlfriend, and more like an actual role model for Hikaru/Rick. The bridge crew also seems SLIGHTLY less vapid, except for poor Misa, who in both versions is made the butt of jokes for being competent and professional rather than giggling like a child.)
