It really isn't fair to compare LotGH's story to any others. For you see, LotGH's strength wasn't in the quality of its writing, but rather in the sheer scope of the story. It was able to convey the feeling of watching monumental crossroads in history unfold in an intriguing and entertaining way. In this aspect, it certainly is one of the best stories that has been told in anime.
However, calling it the greatest story overall is a bit of stretch. Some characters were paper thin. Exactly how many "We will win the battle by charging recklessly" commanders were there? Also,t he story had overall good pacing, but it did drag at times too.
At the end of the day, it's impossible to assign value to stories and rank them in order, as much as /a/ would love to. Of course this isn't to say one can't tell the difference between a good story and a bad story. But among good stories, each one sets out to accomplish certain things. It's quite unfair to compare two stories with two different goals.
