I agreed with almost all his points, to be honest.
I'll start with the stupidest and most ridiculous issue, opening music. I watch through these every single time I watch an episode, unless I've seen it literally 100s of times. I find it ridiculous that fansubbers feel the need to show off fancy subtitles that they can do, when there isn't really a reason for it, and this guy had a point when he said that song subtitles can completely ruin an important scene.
Opening music should not be subtitled in the first place. Maybe the translation can be put at the bottom, but there's no need for the original japanese, the roomaji and the english version of it is stupid (though, I think the original japanese comes on the RAWs sometimes). Personally, I don't want songs to be subtitled at all.
I disagreed with his point on coloured subtitles though. In some cases, colours can be much better than the default yellow/black colour of official subs and can be much easier on the eyes (though the yellow/black is the only font DVDs can do, or something like that). I agree that the over-the-top animated subtitles for attack names are unneeded though.
As for the translations, I don't know the tiniest bit of japanese, so I can't say much about them. I do think that they should be turned into smooth english as much as possible, though, as he said. Translation notes should be used as little as possible.
All in all, I appreciate fansub groups for what they do, and I know I owe them many thanks, but I feel that they would learn something from watching this documentary.
PS; He also had a point about the subbers putting their own names in, too. Sometimes it's a bit ridiculous.
