Well honestly? Nia's role to me was no more annoying than Kamina's.
Mostly because I don't think the series wouldn't have really GONE anywhere if Kamina had lived. True when you first see it Kamina's death is shocking and traumatic but looking back on it I think the whole thing was GEARED toward his death.
Not to mention that Nia sort of served as the love interest and OTHER source of hope for Simon. Sure she wasn't all that original, unique or deep (aside from her Anti-spiral phase which would have made her a lot more sympathetic if they had bothered to explore that. In fact I recall there being a scene in the novel where she's crying in a playground and talks to a little girl only to have her die in the attack) but she served a purpose that fit just as well as Kamina's into the whole grand scheme of things.
