This'll lead to artfag circlejerks over contrived, DEEP symbolism; look at how well Kaiba is doing with its ORIGINAL art.
A good show can become popular and appreciated without the need for stunning visuals. In this extent, look at Lucky Star. It's character design can receive no praise, nor can its backgrounds. However it's content is what keeps so many fans addicted to it even so long after it ended.
