Regarding proper H.264 playback, I've helped a shitload of people here on /a/ and also /g/, I've helped a large number of people on IRC, this one guide at AnimeSucky that I have written has been read almost 6000 times and I've also helped the OP of this thread, so it's not only about one person. And personally I'm satisfied with every person I can get to prefer H.264 MKVs over XviD AVIs, because these helped individuals will join the masses of people wanting H.264 MKV releases, making the demand for them grow.>>12009454
Dunno, but we can only hope it happens as soon as possible.>>12009494
MPlayer doesn't support any of the advanced matroska features, namely ordered chapters + segment linking + editions. And CoreAVC as DirectShow Filter is still a lot faster than libavcodec in MPlayer. Libass, the subtitle renderer in MPlayer is faster than VSFilter though, but these two also render things a bit differently, which is somewhat of a negative point for libass, since subs are mainly styled with VSFilter in mind. But if you're not on Windows, MPlayer is the obvious choice. QuickTime+Perian is fine too, if you happen to use OS X.
