IDK, as sad as scenes like this are its the underlying sense of brutality and ruthlessness in the series that makes it so depressing. Ex:
-The ship gaurd shooting Butter's gf in eps 2
-The Selfishness of most of the characters (lighthouse Klaus Nomi looking kids, Chroniko's family, workers who throw stow-aways off the ship to their death w/o a second thought)
-Chroniko's whole story
The fact that one can simply pull their soul out of their body in this series seems to have made no one in this anime's world give a shit about reverence for life. The whole tone of it is just very dark and sad. Its a reality in which very few people seem to really care what happens to one another, and where selflessness and love truly don't matter anymore, and where for even those whole are still "good" people, the deaths of those around them is not that big of a deal.
