Seriously, the anime is made very generic. There's very little focus on any character except Jun and that new old man they added in to hang out with him and conveniently be everyone's childhood friend. In the manga, when the kids pilot, they're the entire focus of the chapters.
The little bit of plot they give each kid is mutilated in the anime to force some new "program" storyline. For example, in the anime, Kanji's mom is a scientist. He does fisticuffs with another robot to save the building she's in so she can finish her work.
In the manga, his mom is dead. Killed herself on a building. He fights a sniper type enemy who set itself up in Hawaii and started sniping him in Japan with missiles, using the building as a target. He endures the blasts for 36 hours to protect the building she killed herself on, because he wanted to die the same way.
The new chapters show similarity to some plot points with the anime (Jun's mom and Dung Beetle's sister), but are handled so much better it's mind boggling to believe the anime's creator was even thinking of anything other than quick cash while making it.
Honestly, compared to the manga, the anime is just a giant insult. Watch the OP and then never touch it again.
Even standalone the anime's relatively generic.
