Get in the industry. Even in multimedia and web development we need to design websites that can can accommodate 800x600 resolutions, yes, I haven't seen anyone running lower than 1024x768 for 3 years but our company still needs to adhere to that. Still use an CRT and LCD for those purposes (also colors are displayed differently on the two types of screens)

It's all about backwards compatibility and trying to get your show to as much people as possible. Maybe you should stop buying expensive T.V's and actually gain some experience.
