"Comic" is the american.
And "bande dessinée" would be the french one, right ?

I was only talking about details of the illustration because you pointed out the fact that americans were better than japanese at this (wich i was not ok with because my favorite styles are not obligatory the more detailed ones)
But yes of course, scenario, themes, character's psycholoy and relationships : that wasn't the point back here.
But now that you're talking about it : Read some Urasawa (Monster, 20 the century boys),Hikaru no Go (the beginning looks more of a comedy but as it goes there's a lot of very intersting characters), watch Kaiji...
So i don't give all the names but Japan is not only for moe, mechas and schoolgirl.
But since, like for everything, the best things are not always the more discussed, you sure will see the names Naruto, Bleach, Death note or Code Geass when it comes to manga and anime.
