I think you're fighting a losing battle, here. Even though I know Kubrik didn't direct it, 2001's legacy didn't live on very well with 2010 did it?
The thing is, while the realistic nature of soundless space is cool, it doesn't help an audience identify with the scene. Unless we're using as many senses as possible to absorb ourselves into something, it's just flat out boring.
Sure, some people are capable of appreciating it on a different level, but that's a vast minority.
