They mean the same thing within the parameters of the language.
Maybe not when you get into semantics, but if you're going to argue strict etymology, then yes.
It's still not a technical enough term, though. We don't call a katana strictly a "sword", even though that's pretty much what it is and that's what the direct translation of the word katana practically means. Er, well, that's tsurugi, but you get what I mean.
