This is pretty hard to explain, so bear with me...

Basically the idea of lolicon anime is not to sexualize young girls (which is the common misconception with it). Instead it is about creating a more platonic, innocent relationship between the audience and the characters, similar to filial love between an older brother/younger sister (without necessarily having the problems that go along with incestuous relationships) or the platonic love between a big-brother/younger-sister type relationship. The nurturing, beneficient feelings that go along with such relationships achieve a bond with its audience that other shows just don't manage to achieve. In the character driven world of anime, this is a big deal.

Following on from this, it's little surprise that to otaku, imouto type characters became one of the pinnacle forms of moe characters.


I'm not really happy with that description, but until I can come up with something better, I guess that will do...
