It was raining again. Fortunately, I had checked the weather report before leaving the apartment this morning. The sky began to darken as the sound of thunder rumbled in the distance. I listened to the steady rhythm of the raindrops as they battered the windows in the front of the cafe.
"I think it's going to get worse." I spoke absentmindedly to myself. I set my umbrella against the door frame as I put on my uniform jacket. It had become a lot colder since I'd first come to the cafe. As I finished buttoning I noticed him standing behind me, eyes cast downward. He seemed very jumpy and eager to leave, ready to dash out into the rain. He kept shifting his gaze between the doorway and the floor. Wait, not the floor...
"HEY! That's my umbrella!"
He shoved me aside and grabbed my umbrella, darting out into the downpour. I got to my feet and ran outside, hot on his heels as he struggled attempting to open the umbrella. Droplets of water pelting my face, I grew more frantic.
"That's mine, give it BACK!" I grasped at his arm, trying desperately to wrest it from his grasp. He grunted and let loose a vicious backhand. Taken completely off guard, I flew lifelessly to the ground like so much discarded trash. Lightning flashed in the distance, loosing its fierce crackles. I laid there motionless, realization slowly setting in. He'd hit me. Hard. He hit me and stole my umbrella, and now I was completely soaked. However, the last laugh was mine because I stole his watch and it was a Casio.
