Even though the manga isn't stand alone (more like a preview of the show) it answers some of these philosophical questions.
Also, if you remember how Naota always acted like he was too cool, or mature for things? When in fact, he really liked them, but wanted to seem more mature to impress older girls or whatnot.
"That" is being Fooly Cooly.
A fool who changes who he is in order to impress others into thinking they are cool. Instead of acting his age, Naota foolishy tried to be something he was not, and ended up not having any fun that way.
Naota trying to impress Haruko by not being himself is another example of this.
it all depends on how much you want to read into it.
