Naruto is now in what I like to call "Level-Up Endgame".
Naruto has the Level-Up template. The characters get exponentially stronger with each challenge they overcome.
This is awesome at first, but quickly it reaches the point where the powers become absurd and the reader can no longer understand them. This is Endgame.
The most masterful Level-Up Endgame was in Gurren Lagann, where they just allowed it to max out into galaxy-hurling pro wrestling, and then ENDED IT.
The problem is, by the time you reach Endgame, your series is going to be at the peak of its popularity. There is a terrible temptation to drag it out and make money.
Welcome to Endless Endgame. Also known as Dragonball Z. The story now sucks, and you only want to keep reading it to hear the ending, but it's just too profitable to ever bring to an end.
