See, the problem with One Piece is that people think way too hard about it. It is what it is.
As for liking "intelligent" fare, personally, One Piece is more of a guilty pleasure of mine than anything else. I typically enjoy slightly more highbrow fare -- stuff like Monster, Paranoia Agent, and the old classics like JoJo and Lupin.
One Piece is my token silly, childish indulgence, and it is my duty to exalt that indulgence above all other silly, childish indulgences.
For One Piece's part, I think it has a far more genunine charm than other franchises targeted at the same audience -- it has a mostly-authentic spirit of manly youthfulness in the tradition of old shonen fare like Galaxy Express, a real spirit of adventure. I think that shit's important for the youth, and so I get sanctimonious about it.
Besides, fucking Enies Lobby - the main antagonist has a gimp mask and a sword that turns into an elephant. Now THAT'S LOL SO RANDOM XD done PROPERLY.
