Every day, Sumire goes home, and receives a letter from a girl in another country.
She still has the first letter she received, accidentally delivered to her house instead of the neighbors who had moved out long ago.
Sumire reads the letter, which like all the others, recounts the events of a day in the life of a schoolgirl on the other side of the world.
Sumire knows everything about this girl, about the time when her father died, about the time when the kids at school bullied her, the times when she was doing bad in tests, and about her concerns over her mothers remarriage.
Sumire picks up the pen and starts writing. The small lie to comfort the girl all those years ago has blossomed, and now the old man recounts her day at school once again to reassure the foreign girl that she's not alone.
