I have noticed something of a forbidden plot device in shows where the main character's identity becomes under a direct threat.

In Death Note, you get this whole "Light meets L" thingy, and then the whole thing goes downhill slowly from there.
In Code Geass, Mao blows Lelouche's idendity, and behold, crappy episodes ensue.

Obviously, for the sake of the plot, the protagonist manages to keep his alias safe, but the story is never as good afterwards.
What's up with that?
