A straightforward adaptation of novels I didn't read is new to me.
"Exploitation of the medium" is not a reliable, consistent, objective metric on which to judge a story, and seems like an /a/ buzz-term conjured by fans of certain niches. That said, its visuals are effective and actually look good when necessary, without the CG/model to animation/live action that is present in many other space sci-fi works.
Believable battles won by tactics and technology, not burning spirit or retarded 'honorable suicides'; a jarringly accurate and applicable representation of politics and war; a science fiction setting as opposed to a future fantasy setting -- notably, no humanoid mecha. Spaceships blow each other up and I know why. That's why I like it.
