I found that part of the joy of the series was it's rejection of standard procedures, formats and habits. Even if it didn't work 100% of the time, it was still very satisfying to know you were watching something which was completely unlike anything else you were going to watch that year.

Unfortunately it's also a buffet of Rei fanboyism. I mean, it has more cohesive storytelling, but on the other hand it's sorta... you know. He actually puts Rei in places Asuka was just because he likes her more.

Eva would have been the greatest thing ever if instead of observing the minds of horny teenagers, it had focused on the minds of the Angels. You know you want to figure out what this guy is thinking. And give the damn things some backstory.
