ITT: Yu-Gi-Oh? Having only watched the abridged version, I'm -completely- qualified to make a wall of text.
I respect yu-gi-oh for doing exactly what it wanted to do: take a completely arbitrary kid's card game and give it a story and make a show about it. All the main role models are Chessmaster-types, and kid's will feel cool playing the card game.
The main themes I got from Yu-Gi-Oh are:
1. Don't be satisfied with "fun", games should be awesome.
2. If rules make the game more awesome, follow them. If not, break them.
3. In an emergency, FABULOUS may be used as a substitute for awesome.
