This. To this day, I can't sit through the movie because trying to force philosophical quotes to cover the lacking plot is not fun to watch at all. The TV series gave it more of a cohesive plot and actual well done character development not only to Motoko but everyone in Section 9 to a degree. I'm glad that I didn't let my bad impression of the movie take over and actually gave the SAC TV series a chance. Now it's my favorite animu series, but you couldn't make me watched the first movie over even if you put a gun to my head.
All the first movie had was the animation and music, but it pretty much lack in everything else. The movie seems to be made for fans who loved the manga than anything.
