Anyone who "connects" with Light needs to get the fuck over themselves. Light is not a fucking hero in any kind of capacity. The only thing awe-inspiring about him is how his evil plans somehow defy all probability to come together perfectly, and the hilarious realization of just how absurd a world run by a self-righteous Japanese college freshman with a killer notebook would be.
The whole point from the outset that I got out of it was that Light was a bored, self-righteous smart kid who didn't receive nearly as much discipline from his stereotypical Japanese parents as he ought to have been, and all his pretenses of justice were just that -- pretense. He might have gone in with somewhat noble intentions, killing all the world's criminals to cow people into his own sense of ethics, but for all the "good" he did he got drunk as hell on his power.
The whole entertainment value of Death Note comes from realizing how fucking evil Light is and how he has GOT to be fucking stopped, by someone, anyone -- and laughing with a cynical mild facepalm when otherwise smart people like L and Soichiro fail to see through Light's disgustingly thin facade of decency, simply because they're far more decent people than Light could ever be. They believe in science, and they believe that there's a chance anyone could be innocent -- and that makes them easy prey for a murderous douchebag like Light. (Does anyone SERIOUSLY believe that if backed into a corner, Light wouldn't kill his own dad? For all his fine talk I'd stake my fucking tuition that if Daddy Dearest was close to fingering him, he'd whip out the Handy Dandy Notebook and make the elder Yagami nothing more than a memory.)
