In the eighties and ninties, a comic artist named frank miller did a lot of awesome shit. He pretty much saved Daredevil (and created in the process Electra. But that bullshit plot of the movie was nothing like what he did with her). he created Sin City and 300, both of which are now movies as well (and were faithful adaptations). But his big thing was reviving batman. He made batman cool again with "Batman: Year One" and "Batman: the dark knight returns."
Anyway, the thing was, this followed him. People kept harassing him, telling him he needed to do more batman.
This, All Star Batman and Robin, is his response to those clamoring people. He is all but drawing it with a middle finger up, by making the most over the top, grim and gritty parody of his own work.
